Value Chain Analysis

Value chain analysis aims to cover all the ‘links in the chain’ of supply and marketing that support production of an item or a commodity. A value chain assessment typically covers the mapping of the value chain, interrelationships between various chain actors, power relationships among chain actors and the identification of issues/gaps and opportunities at different levels of the value chains.

The value chain analysis covers:

  • mapping of the overall value chain
  • detailed assessment of production, productivity, storage and sales of the item/commodity
  • analysis ofthe economics of production at the household level,
  • assessment of forward and backward linkages, market demand and supply patterns,
  • analysis of challenges and opportunities for development.

Value chain assessments offer information and insights needed to explore and design suitable intervention strategies at different levels of the value chain. interventions often need to be designed not only at producer level but also at other levels of the value chain, to ensure efficiency whilst enabling small producers and farmers along with other actors along the chain to derive benefit.

M-CRIL (erstwhile EDA) has been working for more than 2 decades in direct implementation to improve the efficiency of value chains, with the aim of ensuring improved returns to small producers. We have worked in a variety of sectors, including agricultural crops (rice, pulses), vegetables, honey and leather. Recently a number of Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) have been promoted in UP and Bihar, in north India.

Our clients for value chain analysis or value chain implementation and FPO promotion include: the Ford Foundation, Rabobank Foundation, Michel and Susan Dell Foundation, Aga Khan Foundation, UNOPS/LIFT Myanmar.
